After several Australian states went into lockdown again last week, Kerry Chant, the chief health officer of New South Wales, has now called on the residents of her state to stop talking – whether with or without a mask.

In the wake of a few dozen new COVID-19 cases and a renewed lockdown in Sydney, the top health official in the Australian state of New South Wales has called for a new level in the “social distancing” agenda: Despite the mask, face-to-face discussions should not be taken lead with other people.
After reporting 78 new COVID-19 cases and one death in the state, which is twice the size of Germany and is home to just a tenth of the population, Chief Health Officer Dr. Kerry Chant told reporters on Tuesday that Australians should not engage in face-to-face conversations, even if both sides are wearing masks – regardless of vaccination status.

Literally she said in Sydney:

“Unfortunately, while it is human nature to talk to others and be kind, this is not the time to do so.”

According to Chant, interpersonal contacts should get along without conversation:

“So, even if you meet your neighbor at the mall, don’t start a conversation. Now is the time to minimize your interactions with others.”

Masks do not offer “total protection,” added Chant. Therefore, residents should avoid talking to each other and should “make absolutely sure that we do not come into contact with other people who could pose a risk in our daily activities”.

Much like the Chief Medical Advisor to the White House Dr. Anthony Fauci in the US, Chant has been hailed by the mainstream media as a hero in the fight against the WHO-declared pandemic. Der Guardian described the doctor as “unshakable” and a “secret weapon”. She was named New South Wales’ Woman of the Year for 2021 because of her rigid lockdown agenda.

However, social media critics were not enthusiastic about her advice not to have more conversations. “Unbelievable,” commented TV presenter and author Tonia Buxton, adding ironic:

“Don’t act like a human, forget about humanity and just do as you are told.”

The well-known British pop duo Right Said Fred commented on Twitter that Chant’s announcement reveals the government officials’ “desperation”. “They are either running out of time or going crazy right before our eyes.”

Chant also called on residents to stay at home and refrain from visiting friends and family:

“We always have to remember when we leave our house that anyone with us, anyone we come in contact with, could transmit the virus.”

Since the pandemic began, Australia has repeatedly contained the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic with some of the world’s most draconian lockdown measures to drive the number of new infections down to zero – also at the expense of civil liberties. Lockdown measures were recently reintroduced when the number of infections rose again. In the metropolis of Melbourne, for example, almost everything except grocery stores and hospitals was closed for almost four months, and the city went into its fifth lockdown last week. In contrast, numerous demonstrators took to the streets:

The centrally located, small town of Alice Springs also ordered a new lockdown in June after only one new infection had been reported.
