US congressmen introduce a law in favor of Britney Spears

Two congressmen in the US, one from the Republican Party and the other from the Democrat, presented a bill on Tuesday that aims to facilitate changes in legal guardianship Britney Spears and others affected by the same measure.

The initiative, which gives an example of the singer’s case, is called “law of freedom and the right to emancipate oneself from exploitation”, which responds to the FREE Act for its acronym in English (Freedom and Right to Emancipate from Exploitation Act), a nod to the #FreeBritney movement.

“With the FREE Act, we would free Britney alongside the myriad of abused and exploited elderly and disabled people for a broken system, “Democratic congressman Charlie Crist (Florida), promoter of the project together with Republican Nancy Mace (South Carolina), said in a statement.

The law would allow ward persons to request the removal of a guardian and replace it by another relative, public employee or private professional.

Currently, those affected by legal guardianship have to show that abuse or fraud has been perpetrated to achieve substantial changes, something difficult since the design of the legal mechanism itself reduces their powers and they must at all times be represented by a lawyer appointed by the courts.

“We want to make sure that we add transparency and accountability to the guardianship process. The guardianship of Britney Spears is a nightmare. If this can happen to her, it can happen to anyone “, Mace added.

Invited to testify

The bill is not the only gesture that US policy has made in the case of Britney.

A group of Republican legislators from the United States invited the singer a few weeks ago to testify before Congress to explain the legal battle he has waged against his father, Jamie Spears, for the guardianship that for 13 years controls all aspects of your life.

The Spears case has drawn sympathy from Republicans because, in their view, the tutelage imposed on the artist violates some of the most important basic principles of her ideology, such as individualism, freedom and independence from the state.

Britney Spears, at the MTV Awards, in New York, in 2016.

But also some democrats have expressed their solidarity with the interpreter of Toxic.

For example, Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bob Casey asked Health Secretary Xavier Becerra and Attorney General Merrick Garland for more information on the legal figure that allows Britney’s father to have full control over the artist’s assets, valued at $ 60 million.

On Britney’s legal battle, the Los Angeles Superior Court last week allowed her to choose her own attorney, a substantial change that set precedent in guardianship after the resignations of his previous designated attorney, his artistic representative, and an investment fund that controlled his wealth.
