To field, the supermarket company that has more than 310 stores in Spain, has signed an alliance agreement last June with the company Ocado, a technology company that is a pioneer in the transformation of the retail market.
Thus, it is planned that Alcampo’s first Customer Fulfillment Center (CFC) serve the Madrid region from 2024, and additional m’CFCs will be announced at a future date. Specifically, Alcampo will also use Ocado’s In-Store Fulfillment (ISF) software in its hypermarkets, lor that allows an efficient selection of stores that cover the food business and other supermarket products.
What is the ‘hive mind’?
Currently, the smart warehouses of this company are located in London, where a large ship is occupied by thousands of robots that move through a metal frame for food packaging, as seen in the video.
The robotization and artificial intelligence system found in this extremely large warehouse, like about seven football fields, is known as hive mind and it is used to carry out the complete online purchase process.
Thus, online orders are selected first and taken to the packaging area, where employees work., accompanied by metal arms to control security of different supermarket products.
The robots move through the metal grid, the hive, at a speed of 14 kilometers per hour, with a separation of only 5 millimeters. Total, there are about 2,300 bots that are responsible for moving all the products by the warehouse to carry out online orders made by customers.
After this process, it is time for packaging, where humans intervene, although they also have the help of mechanical arms. The problem to fully robotize this area is that the food packaging is designed for humans, so the interactions with the different objects is complicated.
