The light price continues to rise in Spain just on the eve when the arrival of the first heat wave of this summer is imminent, which will cause a greater use of the ventilation and air conditioning devices.
The average price of electricity in the wholesale market rises 5.5% this Wednesday, until reaching 98.72 euros / megawatt hour (MWh), the third most expensive price set in history, only behind the 99.8 euros / MWh it reached on July 2 and the 103.76 euros registered on January 11, 2002.
According to the Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE), the highest price was 108.01 euros / MWh at 09.00 hours and the lowest (92.05 euros / MWh) is expected from 03:00 to 06:00.
The 98.72 euros / MWh set for this Wednesday are close to the 99.8 euros / MWh that electricity reached for July 2 in the wholesale market and exceed the 94.99 euros / MWh on January 8, when coinciding with the filomena storm the second most expensive price in history was reached until that date.
The average price of electricity has been above 90 euros / MWh in the wholesale market for six of the first seven days of July.
And all this when the most suffocating heat will arrive in Spain this Friday. After a hot weekend like the past, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has reported on its website that we are facing the first great heat wave of the summer.
Between this Friday and next Tuesday the wave will be concentrated in the central and southern areas of the country, where the highest records can be reached so far this summer. Temperatures are expected to exceed 40ºC in Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia, a community where on Sunday they can even touch 50ºC.
In addition, other communities such as Aragon, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Murcia, Basque Country, La Rioja, Valencia and the Canary Islands, have activated the yellow alert, while Navarra is on an orange warning.
However, in the north of the peninsula, the weather will be different. The entry of a cold front will cause a drop in temperatures in areas such as Asturias and Galicia, where rains and strong winds are expected.
