The Minister of Health, Marta Temido, warned this Monday that, “at this rate”, Portugal will double the new cases of covid-19 within 15 days, what “not a good scenario”.

In an interview with TVI, the minister explained that the indicator of the pandemic in Portugal in red in the matrix translates into a “greater risk for all of us, which should have consequences in our daily lives”.

In January, we were already in an area that didn’t even fit in that little square. But if not taking all the necessary individual measures but also the system (vaccination and testing), we run the risk of not being able to stop the evolution of the disease transmission”, stated.

If nothing is reversed, the scenario points to 4,000 new cases of covid-19 and about 400 people hospitalized in just two weeks.

It’s a race against time“, warned Marta Temido, stressing: We have adopted the measures that are justified”.

When asked about the consequences of the worsening of the pandemic, Marta Temido stated that “we cannot rule out any kind of measures”, but assumed: “We don’t have a legal framework for confinement. That would imply a state of emergency that we do not currently have.”

Government wants to start vaccinating children under 18 at the end of August

The health minister also asked for “patience” from the young people, because the country needs this age group for the common objective: stopping the pandemic.

If we can get this message across to them that it’s in their hands and this won’t be the last summer of their lives, it’s the best way to have a better fall and a better rest of our lives.”, appealed Marta Dreaded

To do this, “we need to be quick on the vaccination,” he said, adding that vaccination for those under 18 may be possible before the end of August, as long as the flow of vaccines continues to run as expected.

As for a postponement of the beginning of the school year, the minister argues that “it is not really on the table” and that is precisely what the country needs to avoid.”

We cannot have an epidemiological situation that would put us in a fragile position at the beginning of September”
