Ejidatarios of San Salvador Atenco, in the State of Mexico, denounced the appearance of cracks of up to 300 meters long and five meters deep near the old Lake of Texcoco due to the drought that the area suffered for the works of the canceled project of the New Mexico International Airport (NAIM) in Texcoco.

The Front of Peoples in Defense of the Land (FPDT) explained that on May 13 they reported to the National Water Commission (Conagua) the appearance of cracks was recorded in an approximate radius of five kilometers in the ejidos of Atenco and a side of the Papalotla river.

They also detected cracks on the sides of the Texcoco – Pirámides highway, in a complementary work to the canceled airport (NAIM), and which, they added, was built affecting five of their ejidos and the one that requires its dismantling.

The crack that appeared in the Papalotla River is absorbing all the water at a rate of approximately 300 liters per second. The land that we have defended for two decades now continues to suffer the effects of desiccation and dispossession. Now it is reclaiming its reason for being: a regulating vessel for the Valley of Mexico Basin and the destination of the Xalapango, Coxcacoaco and Papalotla rivers ”, they explained.

The FPDT highlighted that since 2019 they have had working tables and dialogue with the federal government, where the authorities agreed to recover all the bodies of water that have dried up through the cracks and thus form an area called the Life Protection Area.
