It was a project that managed to bring together the best of each guild. From the family of architects and sculptors named Colonia (Juan, Simón and Francisco), to other masters such as Gil and Diego de Siloé, Felipe Vigarny or Juan de Vallejo.
In its interior structure, two clearly identifiable phases can be seen: the classic Gothic from the 13th century and another from the 15th and 16th centuries, flamboyant Gothic, starring the aforementioned Colonia family.
FAITH EXPRESSED IN STONE
Of all the chapels that border this cathedral of Marian dedication, that is, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Chapel of the Purification or of the Constables stands out, a unique example of late or flamboyant Gothic, the work of Simón de Colonia that, by itself It is like a miniature cathedral, since it presents all its elements and ends in height in a valiant starry vault and richly pierced through which the light enters, “the light of Christ”, which illuminates us.
And it is that in its spiritual and symbolic facet, the conception of the Gothic temple is understood as the House of God on Earth, which reminds us of the salvation of souls.
As the professor, René Payo Hernanz, professor of Art History at the University of Burgos, synthesizes, “above its innumerable aesthetic and artistic merits, the Burgos Cathedral is much more than a monument, it is the visible proof of the faith expressed in stone ”.
It is the idea of the Gothic cathedral, like the celestial Jerusalem reflected on Earth, the announcement of the absolute beauty of God.
Its restored interior and exterior -which began in 1994-, allows us to appreciate this Gothic jewel as its first creators saw it at the beginning of the 13th century, without that black smudge that hid for a long time its luminous white stone, from the quarries of Hontoria , a town near Burgos.
