Cologne / Bonn Airport: Just in time for the holidays: innovation at the airport after the Corona break

Cologne –

Cologne / Bonn Airport in the corona pandemic: Anyone who knows the hustle and bustle of the past only noticed sadness with individual passengers and closed shops. That changes now just in time for the holiday season.

  • Cologne / Bonn Airport: Shops are opening again
  • Terminal 1 and 2 in Cologne in operation
  • Cologne airport boss Vanneste optimistic

There are and were hard times in Porz at Cologne / Bonn Airport. This is also confirmed by airport boss Johan Vanneste: “Thanks to the earnings improvement program launched a year before the Corona crisis, we were able to significantly mitigate the financial effects of the crisis. Nonetheless, the pandemic, with historic sales collapses in the passenger business, created a completely new situation that we had to adapt to. We managed to do this thanks to the joint efforts of all employees. “

One consequence: closed shops and an airport that until now seemed almost orphaned in the pandemic. But that is now changing step by step at the beginning of the summer holidays – the airport is being breathed new life.

Looks optimistically into the coming weeks: Airport Managing Director Johan Vanneste, here at a press conference at the end of June 2021.

In a message it says: “In June, more than 10,000 passengers were counted in one day for the first time. This number will double to more than 20,000 in July. ”That is why one looks to the summer holidays with optimism:“ Around 850,000 passengers are expected in the six weeks of the holiday – around 40 percent of the pre-crisis level. ”A total of 550 destinations are served from Cologne / Bonn.

Cologne Airport: Shops like Rewe or Starbucks are reopening

And after a long time, a few shops are opening again for travelers: Rewe, Starbucks, Burger King and Kamps Backstube are now available again.

By the way, both Terminals 1 and 2 are used again for check-in, but the security check is still carried out centrally in Terminal 1. The airport explicitly points out that passengers aged six and over must wear a medical protective mask in the entire airport area.

Even if there are still many restrictions – with the start of the holidays, Cologne / Bonn Airport finally wakes up again from a very long corona sleep.
