COLCHESTER, UK (NV) – Princess Diana’s 1981 Ford Escort sold at auction for $72,000 on Tuesday, June 29, according to CNN.

Previously, Reeman Dansie auction house in the UK had only expected to sell between $41,500 and $55,400. Add all costs, the price of the car comes to $72,800.

The sedan was an engagement gift that Prince Charles gave Princess Diana in May 1981, two months before they got married, Reeman Dansie said.

The late princess drove the Escort until August 1982, but the public hasn’t seen it for 20 years, the auction house added.

The seller is a “great fan” of Princess Diana, and has kept the Escort a secret until now, according to the auction house.

The Escort still retains the original paint color and seat upholstery material, and still carries the WEV 297W license plate, according to the auction house. The odometer shows 83,000 miles on the car.

One of the highlights is the silver frog decoration on the hood, a replica of the gift Princess Diana received from her sister, inspired by the fable of the frog turning into a prince thanks Beautiful girl’s kiss, according to the auction house.

The auction house notes that Princess Diana’s Audi 80 convertible sold for £80,300 last year. (Th.Long) [qd]
