Palma –

In Mallorca, a violent dispute has broken out over the corona forced quarantine for more than 200 students. The regional government had admitted the adolescents and young adults from different Spanish regions to a hotel because they tested positive or had close contact with infected people. A court has now lifted the quarantine for some young people. Meanwhile, they seemed to let it rip in their isolation.

  • The court is now lifting the quarantine of 181 students
  • Police have to come because of loud music coming from the hotel

An administrative court in Palma ruled on Wednesday that all 181 people who tested negative were allowed to leave the hotel. On the other hand, 51 infected students – some of them still minors – have to stay in the hotel.

This was reported by the regional newspaper “Diario de Mallorca” and other media, citing the judiciary. Another 16 are being treated in hospitals on the island.

According to the “Mallorcazeitung”, the Balearic Prime Minister Francina Armengol argued in the morning that lifting the quarantine would be “irresponsible” and “pose a threat to the entire population”.

Corona outbreak on Mallorca: around 1700 corona cases on the mainland

In Mallorca, almost all of the young people affected were initially accommodated in the “Palma Bellver” hotel, which the authorities had rented for quarantine purposes. On Wednesday, however, 21 young people from Catalonia were isolated in Alcudia in the north of the island, who are considered contact persons for an infected person. At first it was not known whether the judgment also applies to them.

Riots in the hotel: young people fled, police have to intervene

Many young people protested against the ten-day quarantine on social media and with banners on the balconies of their hotel rooms. You spoke of “kidnapping”. Two male students even left the “Palma Bellver” on Tuesday evening without permission. The TV station “Antena 3″ filmed the escape. A woman accompanying the two of them called into the camera: “You are leaving because you are free. Point.” The police confirmed the incident.

Orgies in the quarantine hotel: Police come because of too loud music

One of the two young people returned to the hotel a few hours later, wrote “Diario de Mallorca”. The second is also identified and placed with a tutor.

Meanwhile, in the hotel, the youngsters let it crash further: According to media reports, complaints from neighbors about loud music from the “Palma Bellver” as well as objects thrown on the street also led to the police appearing there several times.

Now some of them can leave the hotel. The public prosecutor’s office had described the forced quarantine in the hotel as unlawful. The regional health authority put all students under general suspicion without explaining how an infection could have come about on a case-by-case basis.

Massive corona outbreak on Mallorca: numbers on the island are rising again

Many of the young Spaniards were allegedly infected on a ferry to the island as well as at parties in hotel rooms and on beaches and at a concert in the bullring in Palma. The corona numbers are rising again in the 47 million-inhabitant country after a long time. The 7-day incidence is again almost 58. The strong spread of the particularly contagious Delta variant of the virus in neighboring Portugal is also of concern. (dpa / mg)
