Heavy rain in Aachen floods cellars and streets

The fire brigade in Aachen reported many missions, and they deployed around 200 times in the areas of Herzogenrath, Alsdorf and Eschweiler that were particularly affected by heavy rain.

Heavy rain had quickly filled the canals, flowed into the basement and flooded streets. According to initial findings, however, there was no serious damage.

Train route temporarily closed due to storms

As the Deutsche Bahn announced, a train route between Geilenkirchen and Herzogenrath had to be closed for the time being because the rain had slipped debris and earth onto the tracks at a level crossing. Several trains were canceled.

The fire brigades from Düren and Düsseldorf also reported an increased number of operations due to full cellars. But there was no dramatic situation, said a spokesman for the fire department.

Thunderstorm moved on over the Ruhr area

Later in the evening, the thunderstorm moved over the Ruhr area and Sauerland and discharged there with numerous lightning bolts and heavy rain.

At times, the German Weather Service had warned of large amounts of rain and squalls in some regions, especially in the southern half of the country. During the night, the risk of storms should subside. (dpa / jv)
