For many, he is the man who bathes high-budget films in art. Thus, acclaimed productions such as Interstellar, The origin and the trilogy of The Dark Knight. However, if they believed that his ambition and perfectionism alienated him from blockbusters merely popcorn, they were sorely mistaken! Occasionally, Christopher Nolan not only spoke favorably of the multi-million dollar franchise Fast and furious, but even confessed to having “a very special weakness” for Tokyo Drift (2006). This revelation continues to echo to this day, with the actor Sung Kang | talking about feeling validated.
Last year, Christopher Nolan met on a podcast show Happy Sad Confused (via) where he talked about which was his favorite movie from Fast and furious. Although he manifested himself as a person who favors the “original recipe” – alluding to the very first film in the saga – he suggested that the third installment occupies a place of honor within his preferences. Let us remember that this sequel, known in Mexico as Fast and Furious: Tokyo Challenge, was the first of five that have shown off the Taiwanese Justin Lin in the director’s chair: a filmmaker who (in Nolan’s eyes) took the franchise to another level.
«Actually, I have a very special soft spot for Tokyo Drift«Said the Briton at the time. «The iterations of Justin Lin, as they got crazier and bigger, turned into something different, but somehow fun.«.
In addition to signifying a narrative deviation from the two previous films, Tokyo Challenge brought with him the character of Han Lue, a partner of Dominic Toretto who is deeply immersed in the culture drifting from Japan. Sung Kang | has played Lue throughout the entire saga of Fast and furious, including the recently released ninth installment. By virtue of this launch, the actor held a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, where he dedicated a few words to the fact that Tokyo Drift – what many consider the worst installment of the franchise – get the go-ahead from Christopher Nolan.
“It’s very valuable when you get validation from your peers,” Kang commented. «The irony of movies Fast and furious is that they were supposed to be B movies at the beginning, and now we have Oscar winners like Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron coming to play with us. And Christopher Nolan, a filmmaker like that … His statement gives you an idea that the guy is a true movie lover«.
And I add:
«They reproduce Tokyo Drift all day, every day, somewhere. It’s a great hotel movie and it’s fun. So it is very valuable. You have to laugh a little, because at some point there was an associated prejudice. It was like, ‘It’s a cheesy movie of Fast and furious«. But now, so many people want to come play with us. So we are doing something right.
Fast and furious 9 premiered in Mexican theaters last week. Come on here to read the review of Cine PREMIERE.
