Halep is already the fourth top tennis player to withdraw from the Games after Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem. The Romanian was supposed to carry her country’s flag at the opening ceremony.

“I am incredibly proud to represent Romania, but unfortunately the recovery from my calf injury takes more time,” said 29-year-old Halep, who for that reason also had to withdraw from the grand slam tournaments in Paris and London. “It’s hard to digest, but I’m determined to come back stronger.”

Halep competed in the 2012 London Games, but lost in the first round. She skipped Rio 2016 for fear of the Zika virus. The Romanian won Roland Garros in 2018 and triumphed a year later at Wimbledon.
