Last weekend, the award-winning Brazilian film, Raw ink. The film presents an LGBTQ + account of emancipation: it addresses the story of Pedro, a lonely young man, who, with the intention of obtaining economic gains that allow him to survive, decides to start a routine of dances in the darkness of his room, at the same time as shows her naked body bathed in neon paint, while her content is recorded and monetized before an audience of dozens of strangers on the other side of her computer screen. When he least expects it, Leo appears in his life, who intensely alters his mood and emotional state.

Raw ink was released in April 2018 at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it was awarded the Teddy Award, being recognized as the best LGBTQ-themed film of the festival. Since then, his time on the festival circuit has been marked by triumphs: he won the awards for Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival; the award for Best International Narrative at the Outfest 2018, and the Pink Dragon Jury Award at the Ljubljana LGBT Film Festival in 2018. It had its first screening in Mexico in 2018, during the Guadalajara International Film Festival, where he won the Maguey Prize, an award that celebrates stories about sexual diversity.

Marcio Reolon, who directs the film along with Filipe Matzembacher, highlights both the positive response, from the critics and a diverse audience, as well as the liberation experience of his character.

«From the beginning, we conceive the character as a serious, shy and introspective individual, who, once he moves away from the real world and immerses himself in the bowels of his room, is able to release his true essence through painting that it covers his body, which lets out the person he really wants to be in his daily life.

In the words of Marcio and Filipe, painting plays a fundamental role in the plot, since its impact goes beyond the physical. This is the door to a performance, where the true self can be unleashed as part of a performance, which, in turn, serves to break the heteronormative barrier imposed by society.

In accordance with Shico Mengat, protagonist of the feature film, Pedro was a complex character to develop, due to the number of layers and contrasting personalities. However, for him it was a “beautiful” process to explore the different facets of the character, both the one shown through the computer, and the one that haunts him in his day-to-day life. It also took inspiration from real experiences.

“When building our stories, we usually impregnate them with genuine emotions that we live and experience in our daily lives, which allows us to give a touch of realism to the story that will be told to the public.”

Despite Raw ink It is an intimate and personal film, the challenge was to narrate it from a universal perspective. According to the filmmakers, feelings and emotions became the vehicle that allowed people to awaken empathy, no matter how different the realities that each person lived in their own flesh might be.

Shico, by putting himself under Pedro’s skin, experienced this process even more closely. It was important for him to let his real emotions flow as each scene was shot, in order to connect more easily with the way his character felt. This procedure gave rise to two different souls, that of Shico and that of Pedro, were united into one.

“There was a lot of myself in Pedro, which gave me the opportunity to learn to channel the anger and emotions that my character was experiencing.”

Finally, the filmmakers Marcio Reolon and Filipe Matzembacher revealed that their intention was always to release this film in theaters, that “sacred place”, because, from their point of view, theaters are the ideal place not only to enjoy movies in general , but in particular Raw ink. Due to the theme it addresses, the setting it uses and the colors it uses, Marcio and Filipe assure that experiencing this story “surrounded by strangers in the dark” will be a unique and special experience, without neglecting the preventive security measures that we all know.
