Criminal was killed in a shootout with police after 20 days on the run; lines of investigation will be kept confidential

Disclosure/Civil Police of GoiásMurder, rape, robbery, illegal possession of weapons, invasion, theft and attempted robbery are among the crimes committed by Lázaro

The Public Security Department of Goiás informed, on Tuesday, 29, that Lázaro Barbosa’s family members have not yet searched for his body, which has been available since this Monday, 28, at around 6 pm, at the IML. The bandit was killed in a shootout with the police after 20 days on the run. Murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, illegal possession of weapons, trespass, theft and attempted robbery are among the crimes committed by Lazarus. Even with his death, however, investigations into the case are far from over — as are the authorities’ doubts. According to the civil police, the investigation is still in progress and the lines of investigation will be kept confidential so as not to compromise the elucidation of the facts. “The concentration of investigations is the responsibility of the Civil Police Task Force, composed of delegates from DIH, DEIC and 17th DRP, and the distribution of procedures was based on the nature of the crimes committed”, said the agents.

One of the questions that has not yet been clarified is who helped Lázaro during the 20 days of escapes and crimes, as there are indications that he did not act alone. In the criminal’s pocket, R$ 4.4 thousand were found and there is no report of theft related to the amount. Lázaro’s ex-wife was taken to the Regional Civil Police Precinct to provide clarification, since the complaints indicate that the criminal was in her home. She is suspected of covering up Lazarus. Farmer Elmi Caetano Evangelista, arrested last week, also helped Lázaro, as he acted as “criminal organization leader” who supported him. After harboring the criminal, Evangelista became the target of investigations for allegedly hiring the bandit to terrorize residents of neighboring properties with the aim of devaluing the region, lowering the price of properties so that he could buy them. There is also the hypothesis that Lázaro worked as a “jagunço” or “security” for farmers in the region.
