Dallas / Cologne –

A real era is coming to an end with the Dallas Mavericks – now a new one is about to begin. The NBA club made the signing of new head coach Jason Kidd (48) official on Monday (June 28). The former top player takes over for Rick Carlisle (61), who is leaving the franchise after 13 years on the sidelines.

  • NBA: Jason Kidd will be the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks
  • Ex-professional won the championship with the Mavs in 2011
  • Kidd succeeds master coach Rick Carlisle

For Kidd it is an emotional return: As a player, he won the only championship title of his professional career in 2011 with Dallas under his predecessor Carlisle and at the side of the German basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki (43). At the same time it was the only championship for the Mavericks to date.

Jason Kidd becomes the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks

Kidd ended his playing career with the New York Knicks in June 2013. He then coached the Brooklyn Nets the following season and then oversaw the Milwaukee Bucks for three and a half seasons. For the ex-point guard, the engagement in Dallas is the third head coach role in the NBA. Most recently, the ex-superstar worked as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Made club history together: Dirk Nowitzki (r.) And Jason Kidd won the 2011 NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks. Both can be seen here at the celebrations after the title coup on June 16, 2011.

“He has a winning mentality that has carried him through his Hall of Fame career as a player and helped him make a successful transition into his time as a coach. We look forward to the moment when he gets to work and leads our franchise and the young players into the future, ”said Mavs owner Mark Cuban (62). Kidd said: “Dallas meant so much to me as a player and I want to thank Mark Cuban for giving me the opportunity to return as head coach.”

Carlisle recently announced that he would be stepping down after 13 years with the Mavs. In his last season he had led the Mavs around superstar Luka Doncic (22) into the playoffs, where the team failed in the first round at the Los Angeles Clippers. (kos)
