Nine of the 268 students who remain isolated in Mallorca due to the great outbreak associated with study trips They have been hospitalized over the past weekend.

All of them were transferred to the university hospital of Son Espases de Palma when presenting symptoms of the disease, mainly fever. According to sources from the health service of the Balearic Government, they are in good condition but the health services have decided to transfer them to the hospital out of caution and to follow health protocols.

These are nine young people who were part of the 175 peninsular students who between Saturday and Sunday have been referred to the call ‘hotel Covid’ Palm.

A bridge hotel reserved by the autonomous public administration to accommodate those infected who are not residents of the Island and whose health does not require hospitalization.

In fact, over the last two days there have been moments of tension among students forcibly held in their hotels. Some of them are reluctant to remain in isolation or be transferred to the Balearic Government bridge hotel, claiming that they arrived in Mallorca with a negative PCR. “Now they want to take us to a hotel they call ‘Covid hotel’ and we run the risk of infecting ourselves”explained a student through social networks from her hotel room.

There was also a massive refusal among students to undergo further tests and many tried to get boat or plane tickets to be able to return to their places of origin as soon as possible, skipping isolation protocols. Faced with this resistance, the Government ordered forced isolation due to the risk of “massive circumvention” of health protocols. The Police had to intervene and mediate to enforce the rules imposed in this exceptional situation.

Total, 268 students of four regions of Spain remain isolated in Mallorca. Most in the rooms of the hotels they occupied to enjoy a study trip that has ended up resulting in the largest outbreak of coronavirus unleashed in the country in recent weeks.

The Community of Madrid, in the lead

Until today there are already more than 800 infected in different autonomous communities, with Madrid at the head as the most affected region with 410 young people infected. In the Basque Country there are 172 positives and 300 young people in quarantine, according to Josean Izarra.

In the case of the Community of Madrid, in addition to the 410 positives, another 2,000 people are in quarantine and the region has already registered 11 cases of secondary transmission.

Antonio Zapatero, the Deputy Minister of Public Health and the Covid-19 Plan of the Community of Madrid, has assured in an interview in Onda Madrid that it is the “largest outbreak since the pandemic began and there will surely be more cases.” Thus, he has indicated that the community is testing all the people who are related to this outbreak. They estimate that they will have to run about 3,000 diagnostic tests and have already run 2,400.

Baleares detects 33 positives in two days

The health services of the Balearic Government have detected between Saturday and Sunday 33 positives among students who were in direct or indirect contact with infected boys. Testing is ongoing at this time and there have also been 45 students who have tested negative.

In addition, today it has been reported that the first case of a positive hotel employee has been detected after a screening that has been subjected to 175 workers of the eight hotels of Mallorca where the students stayed.

Most of the students are minors, so parental authorization is needed to carry out the pertinent tests and thus know whether or not they have been infected with the disease.

Parental authorization is also needed to transfer them from the hotel and take them to the Bellver hotel. An establishment located in the maritime passage of Palma that is the bridge hotel chosen by the Government to isolate all tourists and non-residents infected this summer. Always, yes, they are asymptomatic (as in most cases among students) or have mild symptoms.

Of the 268 isolated young people, from Galicia, the Basque Country, Andalusia and Madrid, 175 have already been transferred to the ‘Covid hotel’. Most of the positive cases were detected yesterday, after a screening to follow in the next few hours.

Voices are being raised among some of the student groups denouncing that they are being held against their will. Especially some who claim that they arrived with negative PCR tests and that they have been negative in the tests that have been done these days.

Meanwhile, one of the opposition parties, Vox, accuses the Balearic Government of “illegally detain minors“and has requested the urgent appearance of the Balearic president, Francina Armengol,” to answer for the disastrous management of the outbreak. “
