Limoneros arm themselves with sticks and stones as self-defense groups to confront the narco in Michoacán

Michoacán.- Approximately two thousand lemon trees from the Tierra Caliente de Michoacán prepare federal self-defense groups to confront organized crime before the omission of federal and state authorities to the extortion complaints.

The producers, transporters, cutters and packers of the lemon, work in the municipality as Buenavista, Múgica, Apatzingán and Tepaltepec under the yoke of organized crime group called “Los Viagras”, according to Grupo Reforma.

The Viagras are an opposite group of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) that was also nurtured by former members of the Knights Templar.

Faced with these assumptions attacks with Viagras, the lemon trees plan to arm themselves with sticks, machetes, barricades and even Molotov cocktails to confront the extortionists.

“But we do have firearms, eh? We also have what to deal with them,” said a producer from the town of División del Norte, in Buenavista.

“They (Viagras) control the marketIf the producer does not pay the fee, they do not let the cutters take out the product, if they do not pay attention they are ambushed, they have constantly asked the support of the National Guard, the State Police, but they do not pay attention, the people are organizing to confront them as in the times of the self-defense groups, “said a lemon producer from Apatzingán.

In addition to controlling the market for lemons, they assured that Viagras control the sale of soft drinks, sweets, basic necessities and meat, with the quotas that they demand from small supplier businesses.

“They ask the cutters up to five pesos per box, the packers monthly fees and the producers tithes per plot, here they pay a fee even to the cenadurías, local, taquerías, butchers,” added a cutter who preferred to change direction.

It should be noted that this situation occurred three weeks after the elections, when patrols increased in the Apatzingan area, after a series of drug blockades with burning vehicles.

However, the lemon trees accused that these patrols withdrew and that even the blockade of organized crime towards Aguililla continues in the community of El Terrero, Buenavista municipality.

The criminal group of Los Viagras, is headed by the Santana Sierra brothers and maintains a territorial dispute in that area with the CJNG.

In various narco-messages, the CJNG has threatened to enter La Ruana, in Buenavista, a stronghold of the self-defense groups between 2013 and 2014.

In Tepalcatepec and La Ruana a self-defense group emerged in 2013 to stop extortion, robbery, rape and kidnapping by the Knights Templar, then headed by Servando Gómez “La Tuta”.
