Deceuninck-Quick Step’s original plan was to give him his first Grand Tour taste in the Giro in 2020 and then make his Tour debut a year later. Due to Evenepoel’s fall in the Tour of Lombardy, that plan was postponed by a year. But now that the Giro was also disappointing, the plans are once again being adjusted.

“Remco is not allowed to ride the Tour in 2022,” says manager Patrick Lefevere during the Tour broadcast of the RTBF. “First we will let him drive a nice Giro, in normal circumstances, with normal preparation and winter and with a few races in his legs before the start. That is actually an easy, because logical decision.”

Lefevere also came back to the case of Bennett in the broadcast, who had to cancel this year’s Tour due to knee pain. The manager still has doubts about the so-called knee pain of the Irishman.

“It’s a difficult story. That boy already suffers a lot from stress and the thought of having to repeat his great performance of the 2020 Tour made him even more stressed.”

“He came up with knee pain so we sent him home where he had to rest. There he visited a physiotherapist against the team’s protocol, who told him he was unable to drive.”

“Then he took a few more days of rest, but when we asked if he had resumed training, he said yes. Only he could not send the data from the GPS, because he had not downloaded it. It was a whole series to things that were not right.”
