Ukraine calls the idea of Germany and France about a summit with Russia a manifestation of weakness

Advisor to the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, Mikhail Podolyak, called the idea of Germany and France to resume Russia-EU summits as a manifestation of weakness. This is reported by UNIAN.

“To put it mildly, this is one of the strangest initiatives of all that have been voiced recently in European capitals,” Podolyak said.

He stressed that the idea rightly received a negative assessment from many European leaders. “It is hardly possible to add something to the positions of the Netherlands, Poland, the Baltic states on this initiative. They exhaustively explained why such proposals from European capitals for the leadership of the Russian Federation are a direct and unconditional manifestation of weakness and inconsistency, ”the adviser said.

Podolyak added that the Foreign Ministry should work out how such proposals relate to the role of Berlin and Paris in the Normandy format.

On June 23, the Financial Times reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be invited to the EU summit in Brussels. The idea was supported by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Later it became known that the heads of state and government of the European Union opposed.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba thanked the European Council for refusing to organize a meeting of EU leaders with Putin. “A realistic approach instead of missing gifts,” Kuleba said.
