Healthy Portuguese undergoing transplantation of both lungs after covid-19

Covid-19 is not just a flu. And the proof is in this case, of a healthy man who had to undergo a two-lung transplant.

A little more than a dozen cases are registered around the world, such as that of this survivor, João, a fictitious name to protect his privacy. It is the first covid patient in Portugal to undergo a double lung transplant.

At 60 years old, João was healthy, without associated pathologies, a regular participant at São Silvestre da Amadora, but because of the virus he has been in the hospital for six months.

The disease affected the entire family and was devastating to the lungs of this former police officer, whose breathing capacity was severely affected. At the hospital, he spent months of hospitalization hooked up to the machine and induced coma for weeks on end, the only way to be saved.

In the hospital of Santa Marta, in Lisbon, he would end up making history: he is the first covid patient to undergo a double lung transplant.
