Peru put a foot and a half in the quarterfinals of the Copa América 2021 after drawing 2-2 with Ecuador in Goiania. Ricardo Gareca’s team has four points and must draw at least one draw on the last day to access the next phase.
After the game, the coach of the blanquirroja spoke with the press and applauded the great reaction that the team had to be able to tie the match after being 2-0 down on the scoreboard.
Gareca began by making it clear that in the first half they were clearly outmatched. “There was a great reaction from the guys. We settled down better in the match and we were able to tie it. It was very difficult, very hard”.
The Argentine highlighted the performance of Ecuador. “We are facing an opponent who, although it is true, we recently saw in the Playoffs, maintains an important intensity. I think it was a time for everyone. We could have lost it too, we could have won it”, He explained.
“The explanation for being down in the first half is that they surpassed us. Sometimes our rival is in control, sometimes we are. The boys gave their all and the reality is that they exerted great pressure. They had their chances and then we settled into the field. It is not easy to have the reaction that the boys had”Added Gareca.
Gianluca Lapadula was the big star of the match, but, after being changed, he was observed with ice on his ankle. “Okay, he had some discomfort in recent days due to the bustle of the games, but he behaved well”.
Santiago Ormeño added minutes again with the white-red and is positioned as the main spare part of Gareca. “He is trying to put himself in the best light. He joins the whole group little by little, getting to know his colleagues, he is being given minutes so that he can adapt”Explained ‘El Tigre’.
Although the possibilities are great, Ricardo explained that Peru “is not classified.” “We have to play the last chance against Venezuela”.
About the Vinotinto, he said: “It is a team that has had some problems and is coping very well in the tournament. You have to be careful. They deliver everything on the field of play and we know that he will be a tough opponent”.
Finally, Gareca sent greetings to all the Peruvian people after the severe earthquake that experienced last Tuesday night. “I want to dedicate this reaction to the people who have had a hard time due to the earthquake that occurred in Peru and we hope a speedy recovery for all. We want to dedicate this reaction of the national team to them, at least I hope it has made them happy in some way”.
Peru will end its participation in the group stage of the Copa América this Sunday against Venezuela at the National Stadium in Brasilia. The meeting is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (Peruvian time).
