Annalena Baerbock: “Sinks into chaos” – Green regional association tears itself apart before the federal election
Blast from the Greens before the federal election: Severe conditions in the small Saarland could also be a burden for the candidate for chancellor Annalena Baerbock become!
The state association of the Greens presented itself completely torn on Sunday. There were even boos at the state party conference – hardly imaginable that Annalena Baerbock can expect a tailwind for the election campaign from this state.
Annalena Baerbock: “Sinks into chaos” – Saarland regional association tears itself to pieces before the federal election
Journalist Tobias Fuchs from the “Saarbrücker Zeitung” tweeted: “The state party conference is sinking into chaos. The Greens in Saarland are just making themselves ineligible ”.
The focus of the excitement was Hubert Ulrich. From 2002 to 2017 he was chairman of the Saarland Greens. After the election debacle in 2017, when the Greens were kicked out of the state parliament with four percent, he resigned. Now his turbulent comeback!

Even in the run-up to the state party conference, there was trouble with the Greens. Several board members resigned and accused Ulrich of influencing the selection of delegates for the state party congress, i.e. influencing the majority in his favor. Ulrich denied this and spoke of a “campaign” against him.
The current polls of the Greens:
- INSA: 20%
- Civey: 21%
- Halter (Emnid): 20%
- Forsa: 21%
At the state party conference itself, the previous state chairman Tina Schöpfer clearly failed in three ballots in the election for the top candidate of the Saarland Greens. After that, she resigned from her party position.
After long deliberations, Ulrich was finally placed in first place on the list and received 95 votes in favor, 47 against, with two abstentions.
Saarland regional association of the Greens completely torn – a burden also for Annalena Baerbock?
The party is now completely torn – but the struggle is apparently not over yet! As the Saarländischer Rundfunk reports, some delegates have already announced that they want to challenge this party congress result because the women’s statute of the Green Party actually stipulates that number one on the list must be occupied by a woman. It could therefore be that Ulrich’s candidacy for the top spot violates the statutes.
More politics news:
Meanwhile, Annalena Baerbock should hope that the small regional association in Saarland will soon calm down. Otherwise the quarrels there could become a burden for the federal party – especially in the context of the federal election in 2021!
