The Americans need US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline so that they can promote their gas on European markets, which is a prime example of “unfair competition,” said Leonid Slutsky, head of the State Duma’s international affairs committee. He stated this to RIA Novosti.

In his opinion, the meeting of American leader Joe Biden with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 16 in Geneva, which was held constructively, cannot force the United States to abandon its anti-Russian sanctions policy.

“In the case of Nord Stream 2, US sanctions are a prime example of unfair competition to promote American liquefied gas to European markets. There is no need to fall into illusions and believe that the more or less constructive spirit of Geneva will overnight change this vector of Washington’s policy, ”the parliamentarian said.

Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, reacted to the US statement about plans to impose new sanctions over the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. According to her, the United States is trying to solve the problems of its own non-competitiveness.

On June 20, US National Security Assistant Jake Sullivan announced that Washington was preparing new sanctions against companies associated with Nord Stream 2. Also in the United States, they promised to introduce new sanctions against Moscow due to the situation with Alexei Navalny (FBK founder, included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent, and recognized as an extremist organization).
