Local residents decided to resort to a protest after part of the land plots of the Kobuleti region were put up for auction

TBILISI, June 20 – Sputnik. The Batumi City Court ordered the payment of a 2,000 lari ($ 630) fine on four people detained for administrative offenses during Saturday’s protest in the village of Bobokvati in the Kobuleti municipality of Adjara.

Local residents decided to resort to protest after the government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara put up for auction part of the land plots of the Kobuleti region. The protesters claim that the land belongs to them and was illegally confiscated by the state in 2004. In protest, local residents blocked a section of the Batumi-Tbilisi railway, after which the police intervened.

The detainees are accused of petty hooliganism and disobeying the lawful demand of a police officer.

The protesters told reporters that they do not agree with the court’s decision and do not intend to pay a fine. According to them, the police used force against those detained at the protest.

“We will continue the actions, we will not give up the lands of our ancestors. The announced auction will be canceled, and the territory will be returned to our ownership,” protesters say.

They demand the involvement of representatives of the diplomatic corps in the case.
