Conservative favorite in Friday's presidential election in Iran

More than 59 million Iranians were called to the polls, but turnout was 48.8%, the lowest of any presidential election held in the Islamic republic.

The ultra-conservative cleric and head of the judiciary Ibrahim Raisi won the Presidential elections no Will with nearly 18 million votes, informed the Ministry of Interior this Saturday, 19, the day after the elections. The rest of the votes (more than 3.7 million) were invalid, the minister said. Before the official announcement of the results, Raisi’s three opponents in the election acknowledged their defeat and congratulated the rigorist cleric, who is under US sanctions. Hematí, the only moderate candidate and former president of the Central Bank, expressed in an Instagram message his hope that the next government, which will take office in August, will “improve the situation of the population and generate pride for the Islamic Republic”. The current president, Hasan Rohani, and the head of the Iranian parliament, Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf, also congratulated the winner of the election, as well as the presidents of the Russia, Vladimir Putin, e do Iraq, Barham Salih, among others.
