The PSD admitted today that the party’s candidate for Câmara de Gaia, António Oliveira, indicated that there were “relationship difficulties” with the council led by Cancela Moura, but guaranteed that the former national coach did not communicate his withdrawal.
This is, right now, the truth. He [António Oliveira] communicated [a Rui Rio] that there was this relationship difficulty and that it has existed practically since the beginning – I wanted him to know about it – but he did not tell him that he wanted to give up or slam the door“, indicated a source from the communication office.
Expresso stated that the former national coach informed Rui Rio, in a meeting this afternoon at the District of Porto, of his resignation, alleging “an irremediable conflict with Cancela de Moura, president of the PSD of Gaia, who did not abdicate being No. 2 from the list of councilors of the former national selector or, alternatively, candidate for the leadership of the Municipal Assembly”.
Speaking to Lusa, the PSD communication office explained that the former national coach asked, today, a meeting to the president of the PSD, Rui Rio, to whom he informed that there was a “lack of understanding” with the council and that this was to “damage” the candidacy.
But it did not inform him, in any way, that he was going to give up, or that he wanted to give up“, reiterated the same source.
Lusa tried to hear the president of the PSD Council of Gaia and António Oliveira, but so far without success.
The name of former national football coach António Oliveira was approved at the meeting of the PSD’s Extended District Political Commission, which took place on March 23 in Seroa, municipality of Paços de Ferreira.
Upon the announcement, Rui Rio said that former national football coach António Oliveira has the “adequate profile” to lead the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council.
He has experience in dealing with people and managing people and is connected to the business area, he has the right profile to pick up at Vila Nova de Gaia City Hall and do an excellent job. I have no doubts“, said the president of the Social Democrats at a press conference in Porto, on March 23, where he released another 50 names of candidates for municipal authorities approved by the national leadership.
Asked about a possible “promiscuity” between football and politics, Rui Rio replied that for 15 years António Oliveira “has nothing to do” with football.
What is promiscuity between football and politics is when policy makers have connections to football and go to places where they favor their clubs and associations, which happens a lot,” he said at the time.
This is not the case, underlined Rui Rio, adding that someone who has been linked to football cannot have stigma.
Until now, the candidatures of former national selector António Oliveira (PSD), Member of the Assembly of the Republic Diana Ferreira (CDU), civil engineer Renato Soeiro, who in 2017 was head of the Block list, have been made official to the Vila Nova de Gaia Council. of Left (BE) and that of manager Alcides Couto (Chega).
Local elections must be scheduled by the Government for the period between September 22nd and October 14th.
