You are currently viewing Do you want to become an astronaut and go to the moon? Today is the last day to apply with ESA

Become astronauts it is a dream cultivated since childhood by many, however only a few have all the physical and psycho-aptitude requirements and an adequate level of education to truly aspire to travel “among the stars”. All the more so if it takes into account the selections, which in addition to being extremely hard are rarely held. Suffice it to say that the European Space Agency (THAT) reopened them this year – on March 31 – after 11 years from the previous campaign, in which he became an astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, first Italian woman in space and next commander of the International Space Station (ISS), within the new mission that will see it as a protagonist starting from the spring of 2022. The time window to send your candidacy it was originally scheduled to end on May 28th, however, as the Lithuania recently joined as a new ESA member state, it was decided to postpone the date to 18 June. There is therefore still half a day (24:00 CEST today) to be able to try to make this dream come true.

The ESA commission will evaluate the candidates’ curricula for a few weeks and then the actual selection phase will begin. It will last about a year and a half and will be divided into six stages who will thoroughly test the fitness – physical and mental – of each aspiring astronaut. In theautumn of 2022 four new astronauts who will join the body of the European Space Agency on a permanent basis should be proclaimed, in addition to twenty reserves for short term or short notice missions they will have a temporary contract. In simple terms, these “temporary” astronauts will be able to continue to do their jobs, but will still remain at the disposal of ESA.

To be able to apply, you must have a qualification of pilot per experimental aircraft and / or have one Master’s degree in scientific subjects, from Natural Sciences to Medicine, passing through Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science and others. A perfect knowledge of the English language, have a cool head (or rather, know how to work under great pressure), be willing to perform certain experiments and much more. Until now it was also necessary to respect certain physical requirements, but for the first time ESA has opened the doors of space also to people with disabilities and with a stature of less than 130 centimeters. They can apply for the role of “parastronauta“Even people without feet or legs (due to amputation or congenital defects) and with other disabilities. Of course, all the psycho-aptitude requirements and “certifications” will always be indispensable to aspire to become an astronaut.

ESA’s goal is not only to expand its astronaut corps to continue working on the International Space Station, but also to prepare the men and women who will go to the lunar orbital station (Lunar Getaway) and that they will be able to set foot on the regolith of the Earth’s satellite. Italy has made a strong agreement with the NASA and our astronauts will play a vital role in the mission Artemis, which aims to bring man back to the moon in the coming years. The foundations will also be laid for the first human mission to Mars, which could be launched around the mid-1930s (around 15 years). The astronauts selected in the campaign that is about to end will therefore also be able to aspire to the Red Planet. If you have the cards in order to aspire to become a traveler among the stars, therefore, there is only very little time left to attempt the undertaking.
