According to the church calendar, on June 18, Saints Dorotheos and Anuvius are also commemorated. Sputnik Georgia tells who these saints were and why they are mentioned in the church calendar.

Holy martyrs

According to the church calendar, on June 18, the martyrs Markian, Nikandra, Iperechius, Apollo, Leonidas, Arius, Gorgias, Celinius, Irenaeus and Pamvon, who suffered during the reign of Maximian (305-311), are commemorated.

The martyrs were from Egypt. They were severely flogged for professing the Christian faith. The sufferers who were barely alive were thrown into prison, where an angel healed their wounds.

Many pagans, seeing the miracle, believed in the Savior. And the martyrs died in prison from thirst and hunger.

Bishop of Tire

According to the church calendar, the holy martyr Dorotheos, Bishop of Tire, is commemorated on June 18.

During the persecution of Christians under the emperor Diocletian (284-305), the bishop of the city of Tire of Phoenician (Lebanon) left the city. He returned back under Constantine the Great (306-337) and for more than 50 years ruled over the flock, converting many pagans to the true faith.

Dorotheus was over 100 years old when Julian the Apostate (361-363) began to openly persecute Christians. The saint withdrew to the Mizian city of Ud (now Varna), where the emperor’s courtiers found him.

The saint died during cruel torture in 362, to which he was subjected after refusing to offer sacrifice to idols.

Hermitage Egyptian

According to the church calendar, on June 18, the Monk Anuvius, the hermit of Egypt, is commemorated.

Anuvius, bravely enduring torture during the persecution of Christians in the IV century, remained alive and retired to the desert, where he remained until ripe old age. Having founded a small hermitage in the desert, he lived there with six monks – among them was his brother Pimen. When the robbers ravaged the hermitage, the monks, hiding in an empty pagan temple, gave their word not to speak to each other for a week.

All week the monk threw a stone in the face of the statue of the pagan god in the morning, and in the evening he asked her forgiveness. When the monks asked what his actions meant, Anuvius explained that just as the statue was not angry when he beat her, and did not become arrogant when he asked her for forgiveness, so the brethren should live.

The Monk Anuvius was visited by the hermit dwellers Isaiah, Sur and Paul three days before his death. At their request, the elder told them about his life. According to the monk, his heart always longed for communion with the Lord, many times he observed the angels and the saints of God, as well as Satan with his angels.

The saint in spiritual joy departed to the Lord at the close of the third day. As his soul ascended to Heaven, angelic singing was heard in the air.

According to the church calendar, on June 18, name days are celebrated by Jonah, Igor, Constantine, Leonid, Mikhail, Mark, Nikolai, Nikandr, Peter and Fedor.
