Alberto Núñez Feijóo advances without the slightest shock towards his fifth term as president of the PP of Galicia. The organizing committee of the 17th congress of the party to be held in July has officially proclaimed the successor of Manuel Fraga as the only candidate to lead the formation on Thursday, after he has presented 6,119 endorsements. No other militant has dared to compete with the one who leads the popular Galicians since 2006 and has managed to chain four absolute majorities to the head of the Xunta. Not this time or almost any of the previous ones. Feijóo only had competitors 15 years ago, in his first congress, the one in which the founder of the PP, Manuel Fraga, took the witness after beating Xosé Cuiña and José Manuel Barreiro.
It is these overwhelming victories at the polls that Feijóo appeals to justify such a prolonged leadership at the head of the Galician PP. During the presentation of his candidacy last Wednesday, after being asked about the convenience of a party being led by the same person for more than 15 years, the popular baron defended that the presidency of a political formation should not only be won internally, but also be “endorsed” with electoral triumphs, reports Europa Press. But, in favor of Pablo Casado, he added that this yardstick does not apply to the state level, where “the normal thing”, both in the PP and in the PSOE, is not to win the elections “neither to the first nor to the second ”.
Feijóo celebrates that there is no struggle for the leadership of his party: “The news will be the proposals and not the disputes and they will discuss ideas and not people.” He avoids clarifying whether he plans to also be the PP candidate for the presidency of the Xunta in the next regional elections, which must be held at the latest in 2024. He alleges that doing so would be an “act of pride.” His commitment is to finish the legislature, he repeats, and presents himself to the July congress with “enthusiasm and experience” and with “his heart, head and feet in Galicia.” “I have requested the convocation of the four provincial boards of directors because I want to appear in front of everyone and present my political project,” he announced.
The Congress of the Galician PP, in which it hopes that “the only winner will be Galicia,” proclaims Feijóo, will be held on July 16 and 17 in Pontevedra. Three presentations will be addressed. The first will deal with tax cuts and economic, industrial and employment policy proposals; the second, the future of education and health; and the third, an update of the party’s statutes. Popular leaders defend that, despite Feijóo’s unquestioned leadership, the meeting “will not be a mere internal procedure” and there will be debate.
