Lamentable songs that were heard last Tuesday in the meeting between the national teams of Hungary and Portugal at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. One more time, Cristiano Ronaldo, who with his double became the top scorer in Eurocup history with 11 goals in 22 games, was again the focus of abuse.
According to some images captured by Deportes Cuatro, there was a sector of the local fans who shouted “Christian, homosexual“, in a derogatory way, towards Ronaldo. However, the Portuguese ‘7’ turned a deaf ear and responded as he does best: scoring goals.
Coincidence or not, these homophobic behaviors came on the same day that the Hungarian parliament approved the prohibition of talking about homosexuality in schools, as part of an anti-pedophilia law, vetoing any content “that encourages sex change and homosexuality.”
The Viktor Orban government’s proposal has generated much controversy throughout the country, being classified as “homophobic” by the opposition. Together with them, support groups for the LGTBi collective denounce that the law put homosexuality on the same level with pedophilia.
