In another of his attempts to cast doubt on the popular will when he turns his back on the conservative right, the former writer Mario Vargas Llosa came out to raise the specter of “fraud.” He gave substance to the complaints about alleged irregularities raised by Keiko Fujimori and He asked to wait for the electoral board to confirm them or not to accept defeat.
“I believe that (the National Elections Jury) is the body that should intervene in this case. It is the highest authority to determine whether there was fraud or no fraud,” remarked the neoliberal leader who has become a staunch defender of Fujimori, a regime to which he fought during his short but unforgettable political career in his country.
During an interview with a Spanish media, Vargas Llosa acknowledged that “the word fraud is very dangerous” and he refused to admit the triumph of Pedro Castillo by almost 50 thousand votes difference.
On the contrary, he said that Keiko Fujimori assured him that there are “many indications that the (voting) minutes have been altered and he has been a victim of these alterations and that is why he asks the National Elections Jury to pronounce itself.”
The writer ratified his support for the candidate of the Peruvian right and daughter of Alberto Fujimori, the former president whom he himself faced as a candidate in 1990.
“If this candidate (for Castillo) rises to the presidency, the catastrophe that all Peruvians are going to endure will be immeasurable and will have a lot to do with what Venezuela lives,” he predicted militantly.
Then he emphasized that in Peru “many people” who are Fujimoristas and even anti-Fujimoristas “always”, as in his case, support Fujimori because they do not want “the catastrophe to occur that would be a government of Mr. Castillo.”
He considered that the leftist candidate and the founder of the Peru Libre party, Vladimir Cerrón, “propose crazy and absurd things. “
In passing, he also tried to cast suspicion on the electoral board, which put a limit on the time to present evidence of the alleged irregularities. “I do not quite understand with what criteria after a few hours he cancels what he had determined in the morning and then he does not give an explanation about it,” he said.
For her part, the virtually defeated candidate and on whom a prison order for corruption weighs, keep betting on the climate of confrontation and rift. He announced that on Saturday he will attend a march called by his supporters to protest against the attempted “table fraud” allegedly committed by Castillo.
Fujimori confirmed his participation in the demonstration, called to be held in the Campo de Marte, in Lima, despite the fact that the government announced that it would not authorize it. “There are many groups that today are doing a march and are gathering in the Campo de Marte, I understand that the call begins at three in the afternoon, I am going to participate and I will be there from four o’clock,” he declared .
