The Granadilla de Abona City Council gave the green light in the last plenary session to the initial approval of the municipal ordinance for motorhomes, campers and caravans in the municipality, an activity that has experienced significant growth in recent years, especially in the south of the Island.
In order to respond to the rise in social demand for itinerant tourism, especially in holiday periods, the Department of Transport intends to regulate this modality from the point of view of legal security and thus offer greater guarantees for motorhomes and citizens in general. .
According to municipal sources informed this newspaper, the objective of this regulation is to establish a regulatory framework that allows the rational distribution of public spaces and temporary or itinerant parking, in order not to hinder vehicular traffic, preserve resources and natural spaces, minimize possible environmental impacts, guarantee the safety of people and the proper rotation and equitable distribution of public car parks among users of public roads, as well as promote the economic development of the municipality, especially tourism.
The ordinance establishes a sanctioning regime with infractions classified as minor, serious or very serious, which can reach fines from 150 to 3,000 euros. An article is also established with the rights and duties of the drivers and users of this activity, as well as prohibitions of stops and temporary parking areas in reserved areas on public roads owned by the municipality, among other points.
The mayor, José Domingo Regalado, explained that this regulation aims, on the one hand, to fill the existing legal void on this matter and to be able to achieve greater legal security, and on the other, to promote the economic development of the municipality, especially with the promotion of spaces for public use as a tourist site and source of local wealth.
The Councilor for Transport, Fredi Oramas pointed out that this regulation, agreed with groups and associations of the sector, will allow to regulate a type of tourism “very booming” in Granadilla de Abona, especially during holiday periods. In addition, he indicated that there is currently a space on the coast of the municipality, enabled since last summer, on a site popularly known as La Inglesa, in the El Cabezo area, with a capacity for fifty vehicles to park. The Granada councilor also recalled that steps have been taken to enable other points in the southern municipality.
Santiago del Teide
The Santiago del Teide City Council also initially approved in its last plenary session the regulatory ordinance for the parking and overnight stay of motorhomes, to enable the practice of motorhomes and the use of parking areas by residents and visitors in a balanced way.
As reported by the City Council, the ordinance consists of six articles and three additional provisions and will be submitted to public exposure during the following 30 days after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP) so that interested parties can present the appropriate allegations.
In this way, the City Council chaired by Emilio Navarro seeks to regulate the legal vacuum that exists regarding this activity in the municipality and establish greater guarantees for motorhomes, promoters and managers of service and parking areas, whether publicly or privately owned, managers of municipal services (Police, Treasury, works, licenses …) and for the general public, in addition to promoting the economic development of the municipality.
