The presidents of PP, Vox and Ciudadanos, Pablo Casado, Santiago Abascal e Ines Arrimadas, respectively, they are this Sunday in the Plaza de Colón in Madrid to raise their voice against the granting of pardons to those convicted of the ‘procés’, in a concentration convened by the Unión 78 platform, a “civic and political” platform that integrates Rosa Diez, Maria San Gil O Fernando Savater.

One of the controversies around this appointment, encouraged by the Government, is whether there will be a reissue of the ‘Columbus photo’, in reference to the one that took place in that same scenario in February 2019, on that occasion to demand elections. anticipated and that in addition to Casado and Abascal had Albert Rivera, then president of Cs.

It is unlikely that the leaders will even cross paths to focus on the cause for which they are taking to the streets this Sunday. In this sense, Rosa Díez has already anticipated that there are no “reserved places” or a “zero row” for political leaders. “Each one will be where they want and with whoever they want,” he said.

According to the promoters, it is a “transversal” concentration where people with “different ideologies”, also “many” who have voted for the PSOE, are “united in defense of the common”, in the words of the former president of UPyD. Only members of Union 78 will be on the Colón stage.

The protest comes a few days after the Chief Executive, Pedro Sanchez, asked from Argentina “understanding and magnanimity” to the Spanish society in defense of the pardons and stressed that, although it understands “the objections”, the “objective is worth it” because steps must be taken in “the relaxation of coexistence.”

However, PP, Cs and Vox reject the arguments of the Executive and consider that there are even “more reasons” to demonstrate, especially when it has been known that the Civil Guard intervened in October 2020 the ERC roadmap to force pardons and to reactivate the unilateral way, something that would question the supposed resignation to the unilateralism expressed by letter a few days ago by the leader of ERC Oriol Junqueras.

Signature collection

The leader of the PP, a good part of the party leadership, the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and several regional presidents of the formation are in the concentration of Colón, not different autonomous barons such as Alberto Núñez Feijóo, Juanma Moreno Y Alfonso Fernandez Manueco. From ‘Genoa’ they deny that there are internal differences within the party regarding the follow-up of that demonstration and, as proof of this, they have released statements by Feijóo or Mañueco supporting the initiative and expressing their rejection of the pardons.

Apart from going to Colón, and to show territorial muscle unlike Vox or Cs, the PP takes this Sunday its tables to collect signatures against pardons to the squares of the Constitution of the main cities throughout Spain to facilitate that they can also express its rejection by those citizens who have not been able to travel to the Madrid square.

Vox overturns

For its part, Vox has turned to the protest with a large delegation headed by its president, Santiago Abascal, and buses from different Spanish provinces. Vox had already assured that it would mobilize against the pardons both with institutional actions and in the courts and mobilizations in the street.

For this reason, it joined the convocation of Unión78 as soon as it was announced and will be seconded by its leadership practically in full. Abascal is accompanied by leaders such as Ivan Espinosa de los Monteros, Rocío Monastery, Macarena Olona O Jorge Buxadé.

The Vox delegation went to Colón without party identifications and accompanied by flags of Spain.

Cs, “ordinary citizens”

On the part of Citizens, they go Ines Arrimadas; the deputy secretaries general, Edmundo bal Y Daniel Perez Calvo; and the leader of Cs in the Parliament of Catalonia, Carlos Carrizosa.

From the orange formation they insist that these leaders participate “in a personal capacity” and “as ordinary citizens” in a concentration called by a civil platform that, as they recall, has asked that the protagonism not be for the political parties. In Cs they maintain that this Sunday thousands of people are demonstrating who, having voted for different parties, also the PSOE, coincide in demanding that Sánchez respect the sentence of the ‘procés’.

Unlike Casado and Abascal, for Arrimadas it is the first time that he has demonstrated in the Plaza de Colón against pardons. He was not at the 2019 protest because, he said, his flight from Barcelona was delayed and he did not arrive in Madrid on time. constitutionalists, make it clear to the Government that their rights “are not for sale.”
