'The belly of the sea', by Agustí Villaronga, sweeps the Malaga Festival

It was one of the favorites. By risk, by packaging and by result. The belly of the sea, from Agustí Villaronga, came as one of the most anticipated titles of this edition of the Malaga Festival, and it did not disappoint. A proposal that adapts a text by Alessandro Baricco and that unites past and present, with the story of the shipwreck of a frigate in the 19th century, and its parallels with refugees and migratory crises today. The jury of the Official Section has not thought about it, and has given Villaronga’s film -director of Black Bread and cult films like Behind the glass– all possible prizes, including the Golden Biznaga for the best Spanish film.

But he also won Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Actor for Roger Casamajor -Villaronga’s fetish actor, Best Soundtrack and Best Photography. Almost full. For the rest he left the crumbs. A booty that is too bulky. Especially when there were at least two other movies that deserved to scratch something else. The two revelations of the Festival.

But, from Julia de Paz, she had to settle for the Feroz award given by the cinematographic informants, and the Best Actress award for that whirlwind named Tamara Casellas who gives soul to a mother who is not idealized. For its part, Flash Bravío it won the special jury prize and the one for Best Editing. It knows little for that discovery called Ainhoa Rodríguez, who turned the contest upside down with her radical vision of emptied Spain and female desire from the age of 50. Two directors who started their careers here, but who have not been able to repeat the success of directors such as Pilar Palomero, Elena Trapé or Carla Simon.

Another one that was unfairly empty is Judith Colell, the Catalan director who seemed to convince critics with her portrait of mistreatment in the upper classes of the Dominican Republic in 15 hours. He was competing for the Golden Biznaga among Latin films, but the winner was the other favorite, Carnival, who also won the Best Supporting Actor award for Alfredo Castro. The best supporting actress was María Romanillos, for Las consequences, a title that also convinced the critics jury. The award given by the public went to Chavalas.

This concludes another edition marked by the coronavirus, although the director of the contest trusts that it will be the last and in 2022 it will be possible to return to one of the identity signs of the festival: the closeness of the people with their stars.
