“Young bearded man”: filmed without his knowledge by Netflix, a man from Nice complains

« Dthey young bearded men with backpacks shake hands and go their separate ways ”. These terms, spoken when activating the audio description of the Netflix blockbuster Sentinel, describe Rami Sahli, a 22-year-old from Nice and one of his colleagues. The young electrician was however not aware of his appearance in the action film, directed by Julien Leclercq, reports nice morning.

Sentinel, ranked number one in the United States and second in France on the video platform, tells the story of a soldier named Klara returning from Syria, who finds herself assigned to Operation Sentinel in Nice. It is during a scene, in the viewfinder of Klara’s assault rifle, that Rami Sahli appears, thus referred to as a “young bearded man”.

“I have nothing to do with Islamism, terrorism”

The electrician from Nice will thus discover that he was filmed without his knowledge just a few hours after the blockbuster was put online on Netflix. The young man has indeed received nearly 80 messages indicating his presence in a passage of the film.

“The audio description calls me a bearded man. I have nothing to do with Islamism, terrorism. The scene is shot at the very spot of the Nice attack! », Denounces Rami Sahli, who has never given his agreement and has not signed a contract.

And to add: “I do not understand how the director can make me pass for a terrorist. Just because I am from the Maghreb? Because I have a backpack? And what ? Am I going to commit an attack because I have a backpack and I am from the Maghreb? Does it make more suspense, money? Is that the point? “.

A complaint filed for public incitement to discrimination

The young man now fears that the film will harm him. With his lawyer, Jean-Pascal Padovani, he filed a criminal complaint for public provocation to discrimination and racial hatred. He also attacked Netflix for infringement of image rights.

According to the lawyer, Netflix would have tried to downplay the importance of the scene in the film. However, after a first letter was sent to them, the platform only modified the audio description. The scene still appears. Rami Sahli is now demanding that his image be completely removed from the film and the trailer.
