A public holiday that falls on a calendar weekend – Saturday or Sunday, according to Russian legislation, is automatically transferred to the next Monday or another convenient date. After celebrating the Day of Russia, the first working day will be Tuesday, June 15.

history of the holiday

The Day of Russia holiday was founded relatively recently – its birth is associated with the collapse of the USSR and the formation of new, independent states on its territory.

The date of the holiday, June 12, was not chosen by chance – it was on this day 31 years ago that the Congress of People’s Deputies, the legislative body of the RSFSR, adopted the “Declaration on the Sovereignty of Russia.”

In Russia, the first presidential elections were held on June 12, 1991, when Boris Yeltsin won the elections.

The date of the holiday was officially established in 1994 and called the celebration the Day of the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty. Day of Russia – the modern name of the holiday was given in 2002 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

For many years, the Day of Russia was perceived by the residents of the country as just an additional day off. But the number of Russians celebrating the holiday is growing every year, and celebrations – festivals, concerts, street festivities – cover the whole country.

On the Day of Russia, by tradition, in the Kremlin, the president of the country presents state prizes and awards, and on Red Square in the capital, festive events are held, which end in the evening with a large fireworks display.

Festive events on June 12 take place throughout Russia – concerts and other mass entertainment events are held at concert venues and in parks. Buildings and streets are decorated with national flags. Due to the epidemiological situation, mass events will not be held in 2021.

How will it be celebrated in 2021?

The Day of Russia in 2021 is not usually celebrated. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the June 12 celebrations will certainly take place across the country, but most of them, like last year, will move to the virtual space.
