Warner prepares a 'Lord of the Rings' anime film about the history of Helm's Deep

Twenty years after the launch of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, there is no doubt that the work of J.R.R. Tolkien is still very present in the audiovisual mainstream. Beyond the successful re-release of the trilogy directed by Peter Jackson in several countries of the world, Amazon faces the most expensive production in its history with a series of The Lord of the rings that promises to tell us unpublished stories of Middle Earth … and that is more or less the promise that it also launches The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, the unexpected animation project that Warner Bros. has just announced, and that it wants to release as soon as possible.

The War of the Rohirrim is an anime film that acts as a prequel to the well-known story of The Lord of the rings, going back several centuries to focus on the past of one of the most famous locations in Tolkien’s novels: Helm’s Deep. The War of the Rohirrim will thus narrate the story of the ninth king of Rohan Helm Hammerhead, investigating how the setting of what many consider the most spectacular battle of the Jackson trilogy was built. Produced by Joseph Chou, in charge of the script we have Jeffrey Addis Y Will Matthews, responsible for another epic fantasy as it was Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance.

As for the director, Warner Bros. Animation has thrown in the rest to hire a most prestigious name in anime: Kenji Kamiyama. Kamiyama has been involved for years in the franchise of Ghost in the Shell, as well as series of the style of Ultraman Y Cyborg 009, and in 2017 he released the feature film Ancien and the magical world. Warner Bros. Animation is the studio that has been behind films like The LEGO Movie (and derivatives), as well as Happy Feet, the Tom y jerry that was released recently and the imminent Space Jam: New Legends. The War of the Rohirrim It would be his first anime project, the development of which he has entrusted to Sola Entertainment.

From New Line Cinema (associated with Warner Bros. Animation for production, and responsible for Peter Jackson’s films) they have wanted to maintain the link with previous film adaptations, so that the Tolkien specialist Phillipa Boyens (scriptwriter of The Lord of the rings Y The Hobbit, and apparently responsible for the famous phrase “There is meat on the menu again, guys”) act as a consultant. Sam Register, de Warner Bros. Animation, describe The War of the Rohirrim What “An epic representation of the world of JRR Tolkien that has never been told before.”

“All of us at New Line have a great affinity for the extraordinary world that JRR Tolkien created, so the opportunity to re-immerse ourselves in Middle-earth with the Warner Bros. Animation team is a dream come true.” can be read, on the other hand, in a statement published jointly by Warner Bros. and New Line. “Fans know Helm’s Deep as the scene of one of the greatest battles ever made to film and, with many of the same creatives involved and the brilliant Kenji Kamiyama at the helm, we couldn’t be more excited to offer a fresh take on his story”.

The studio has not given a release date although its idea is for it to be distributed in theaters, and it is unknown if The War of the Rohirrim could arrive previously to the expected Lord of the Rings from Amazon.
