The National Court has condemned the Treasury to pay 6,000 euros to a wedding couple for wanting to seize and ruin their wedding. Two officials broke into Badajoz in June 2019 during the celebration and threatened to suspend it because the company in charge of catering had a debt with the Tax Agency.
The wedding was already at the banquet, with a hundred guests, when the two people appeared stating that they had orders to “seize the wedding.” A) Yes, they asked the bride and groom to sign some documents or stop the celebration. Even the Civil Guard went to the place to ask the couple not to pay the catering company the amount they still owed, but to pay it to the Treasury. The couple asked to postpone it, but officials stayed there for about four hours.
The judgment of the National Court
As the National High Court has concluded in its judgment, which Europa Press collects, the performance of the officials was “disproportionate” and that it was not necessary to “humiliate a debtor in front of his clients” or “ruin” the wedding. They assure that the presence of the officials “was avoidable”, being able to do so in moments prior to the wedding instead of intimidating the bride and groom “with ‘seizing the wedding’ and paralyzing it” if they did not sign the documents.
“Lack of empathy”, blames the National Court, as well as “an abuse” on “such an important day.” “The only thing missing was for the Tax Agency to dedicate itself by system to invade the privacy of citizens in the celebrations of baptisms, communions and weddings,” they sentence.
A wedding ruined by Hacienda
The court also assures that the couple “will have a bad memory of what could and should have been one of the happiest days of their lives”, generating “anxiety, unease and indignation”. In this way, for all these damages, the National Court has estimated the fine that the Treasury will have to pay as compensation at 6,000 euros.
Everything happened two years ago, on June 1, 2019, around 4:00 p.m., in the Los Cañizos farmhouse (Badajoz). According to the head of the Contentious-Administrative Court Number 2, Luis Alfredo de Diego, it all started when the girlfriend and two cousins left the toilet and met the officials. They thought it was a joke because some of the groom’s friends were actors, but then the official explanation arrived, giving rise to all the attempts of the couple to try to continue with their celebration.
