“The project was implemented thanks to the synergy of American, Uzbek and Georgian investments, which means that Georgia, as a gateway to this region, has always played and will play an important role in connecting the markets of Europe and Asia, West and East. This is an example of the fact that we are already very a strong regional logistics center, “said Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava at the opening ceremony of the new terminal.

According to Turnav, cargo from Central Asia through Azerbaijan will be distributed through the port of Batumi to the United States, Europe, Africa, Australia.

The Minister noted that the demand for mineral fertilizers is growing in the world, because, especially in the post-pandemic period, the demand for the production of agricultural products and food products is growing. Therefore, it will be a growing, interesting, profitable and promising business.

Despite protests

Various social movements have repeatedly opposed the construction of the terminal. The residents of Batumi themselves staged protests, as they believed that the construction of a chemical terminal was planned. Along with urea, in their opinion, other chemicals that are dangerous to human health and the environment will be brought to Georgia.

In March last year, construction was suspended by a court decision. Then the court ordered the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture to prepare and submit an opinion on the impact on the environment during the construction and operation of the terminal.

“This is a completely safe facility, built using the latest environmentally friendly technologies, and, in practice, investors answered all the questions that existed in society regarding environmental safety,” the minister said.

During her speech, Turnava admitted that there were questions about the project, there were protests from the population, and called it natural. According to her, Batumi is developing as an important tourist destination, so all industrial facilities here must comply with a special environmental standard.

“All licensing processes have been completed, the terminal is mainly equipped with Siemens equipment, as well as various filters, including air or dust, and all this ultimately guarantees that the terminal, equipped with European and American technologies, will be completely safe. serve global transportation and create new jobs in the region, ”said Turnava.

It is reported that at the initial stage, the terminal employed 100 people and in the future the number of employed among local residents will increase.

The investors of the new multimodal terminal in the port of Batumi are the American corporation Trammo and Wondernet Exspress Investment Group. Trammo is engaged in the international trade, transportation, distribution and promotion of fertilizers, chemicals, methanol, crude oil, LPG and petrochemical products.
