Morocco has reacted this Friday to the resolution of the European Parliament that rejected the use of minors by the Moroccan authorities in the migration crisis in Ceuta. In a statement from the Foreign Ministry, he points out that “the instrumentalization” of the European Parliament in the diplomatic crisis with Spain is “counterproductive.”
The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced that the resolution “follows a logic of political escalation with little vision of the future“, adding that” it does not contribute to the solution. “Morocco does not need any guarantees in its migration management. The teacher and student stance no longer works. Paternalism is a dead end. It is not the punishment or the reward that induces the behavior, but the conviction of a shared responsibility, “said the ministry.
In the note, the Moroccan Government regretted that yesterday’s resolution is not in line with the “exemplary” Moroccan cooperation in migration matters, and recalled that the country aborted since 2017 more than 14,000 irregular migration attempts, it dismantled 5,000 human trafficking networks and rescued more than 80,500 migrants adrift at sea, in addition to preventing numerous attempts to assault the fences of Ceuta and Melilla.
“This maneuver, which aims to avoid the debate on the deep reasons for the crisis, does not deceive anyone,” deplored the note that once again asserted that it is about attempts by Spain to “Europeanize” the crisis that they do not leave for Morocco. of being “futile attempts and do not alter the purely bilateral character (between Spain and Morocco) “of the crisis.
Morocco remembers that the problem “is still with Spain, as long as the reasons that caused it are not resolved “, referring to Rabat’s claim that Spain change its position on Western Sahara.
The European Parliament rejected yesterday Thursday in a resolution (with 397 votes in favor, 85 against and 196 abstentions) the attitude of Morocco for allowing the arrival in the Spanish North African city of Ceuta last May of about 10,000 emigrants, including minors and children for “put political pressure” on Spain, but at the same time he hoped that this crisis will not deteriorate relations between Brussels and Rabat.
“It shows, at the level of the southern neighborhood of the EU, that even the oldest and most successful constructions can be the subject of untimely and opportunistic actions in the European Parliament,” he said.
“As much as Morocco is satisfied with its relationship with the European Union, it considers that the problem continues to be with Spain, as long as the reasons that triggered it are not resolved “The ministry stressed, adding that Morocco has never judged the association with the EU on the basis of short-term incidents, but on the basis of reliable long-term action.
Furthermore, the position of the Member States of the Commission and the Foreign Service was constructive regarding the key role of Morocco in the Euro-Mediterranean partnership and the positive appreciation of cooperation in the field of migration, the ministry concluded.
