The ceremony of the knives during the final of Top Chef 2021 was full of emotions, Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Mohamed Cheikh, crowned winner of the M6 culinary competition, was surrounded by his relatives. His wife Sofia, but also his parents were present. Everyone jumped for joy at the announcement of the verdict, and his father was very moved … a rare occurrence. On the set of Daily the day after her victory, Hélène Darroze’s candidate opens up about this timeless moment.
When he announced his triumph, Mohamed Cheikh had an absence … then he embraced his whole family, in particular her dad who appeared very moved, with tears in his eyes. “With us, the balance of power between men is always quite strong. The father, he is very, very hard on his son for it to succeed. So he’s always been behind me, and it’s also thanks to him that I’m here today. And this is the first time he has emptied his bag with tears in his eyes. He said to me: ‘I am proud of you, you have become a man, you are an example for your brothers and sisters’. And many other things“, remembers the future dad on the antenna of TMC.
Overwhelmed by his victory but also to see the pride in the eyes of his parents, Mohamed Cheikh continues: “Frankly, this is my greatest achievement, clearly. To see my parents like this it’s a lot of emotion. This is madness. I realize what I’m going through today and it’s amazing. I shit to get there, and I’m very, very proud to have made them moved as they were and as they are.“
Hélène Darroze, also present opposite Yann Barthès on the set of Daily, also has a say in this father / son relationship. “He has a story with his dad which is quite extraordinary. Me, that had touched me enormously. At one point, his dad would go every night around 11:00 p.m. to midnight, well when he finished, he would pick him up after work because there were no more subways, or trains or RER. He worked early in the morning and he was there, his daddy was waiting for him. I find it extraordinary“, says the chef who watched the final of Top chef with her daughters Charlotte (14 years old) and Quitterie (11 years old) in her Parisian restaurant, Jòia, where she had a television installed for the occasion.
