Fifty years of the life of the Chilean writer Isabel Allende are compressed into 3 chapters of the miniseries “Isabel”, recently released in Prime Video.
With more than 65 million books sold and being one of the most representative writers in the world, the 78-year-old writer has been captivated and moved by the scenes of each episode and by remembering the strongest moments of her life. After arduous research work, the miniseries “Isabel” covers her childhood, her loves, loss, abandonment and her vision of feminism.

1. HE WAS BORN IN LIMA
Did you know that the famous Chilean writer, Isabel Allende, was born in Peru? Due to the work of her father, the diplomat Tomás Allende (first cousin of Salvador Allende), Isabel was born in Lima on August 2, 1942, where she remained the first years of her life. Following the abandonment of her father, her mother was forced to return to her parental home in Chile with her three young children. With her mother’s second marriage, Isabel left to live in other countries such as Bolivia and Lebanon. Back in Chile, Isabel meets her future husband Miguel Frías.
2. MERYL STREEP AND WINONA RYDER IN “THE HOUSE OF SPIRITS”
Although Allende is a best-selling writer, “La casa de los espíritus” is the most recognized novel of all her literary work. The amazing thing is that the movie based on the book starred 5 Hollywood stars like Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder y Antonio Banderas. It was directed by Bille August and premiered in 1993, but it had no major significance.
3. THE LOSS OF PAULA
The hardest episode in the life of Isabel Allende is, without a doubt, the death of her daughter Paula, in 1992. This painful event was narrated by Isabel in the book “Paula” (1994) in which she feels the sadness and despair of a mother faced with the illness and loss of her first daughter, as well as her acceptance process. According to the writer’s statements, upon seeing this episode in the series “Isabel”, memories of the past blossomed again.
4. BOLD REPORTS
With the magazine “Paula”, Isabel and a group of Chilean women confronted the conservative and macho society of the 60s through daring feminist and revolutionary reports on the situation of women. They dealt with topics such as abortion, the contraceptive pill or divorce, contents totally uncomfortable for the time. Among Allende’s notes with the greatest impact were “Interview with an unfaithful woman” and “The courage of single mothers.”
5. ABOUT THE SERIES IN PRIME VIDEO
“Isabel” is a Chilean production by Rodrigo Bazaes starring actress Daniela Ramírez. Also participating are Néstor Cantillana, Camila Correa Soya, Rodolfo Pulgar, Catalina Silva and Rosario Zamora. There are only 3 episodes (“The cost of freedom”, “The devil in the mirror” and “The spirits”) of one hour each on average.
