International Folk Festival named after Erkomaishvili will be held in Tbilisi for the first time

The new festival is named after the famous Georgian musician, singer, choral conductor, folk songwriter and teacher Anzor Erkomaishvili

TBILISI, 11 Jun – Sputnik. The first International Folklore Festival of Anzor Erkomaishvili will take place at the Tbilisi Cultural and Music Center named after Jansug Kakhidze from 12 to 20 June.

The new festival will be held with the support of the Tbilisi City Hall and will bear the name of the outstanding Georgian musician, singer, choral conductor, folk songwriter and teacher Anzor Erkomaishvili. The festival was established to perpetuate the name of Anzor Erkomaishvili and to express his gratitude for the work he has done to preserve and develop Georgian folklore, the organizers say.

The festival is conceived as international, however, due to the situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, folklore ensembles from different countries cannot come to Georgia. So this year only Georgian ensembles will appear in front of the audience.

The program of the event includes four concerts: on June 12, the Georgian State Folk Song and Dance Ensemble “Rustavi” will perform, on June 13, the State Folk Song Ensemble “Basiani”, on June 19, a concert of the State Academic Folk Song and Dance Ensemble of Georgia “Erisioni”, and on June 20, the State Ensemble Abkhazian song “Shavnabada”.

Anzor Erkomaishvili passed away in 2021, at the age of 81, as a result of complications caused by the coronavirus. He is the founder of the Rustavi and Martve ensembles known in Georgia and abroad. Last year, on August 10, 2020, Erkomaishvili celebrated his 80th birthday. President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili awarded the artist with the Order of Radiance.
