You are currently viewing CPI in attack: breaches of confidentiality and new names cause suspense

Senators exposed buckshot ammunition, citing names of businessmen and dangerous relationships

For Márcio de Freitas*

The rapporteur of the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on the Pandemic, Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), used a football metaphor to translate the investigation’s clashes by saying that, as in football teams, the collegiate also has 11 members, but that there is no there were goalkeepers or defenders. “We are all attackers”, compared Calheiros, this Friday, during the testimonies of Natalia Pasternak and Cláudio Maierovitch.

You two researchers they beat President Jair Bolsonaro a lot, for his lack of preparation to protect the population and for publicizing alternative treatments without scientific evidence. Everything they have been talking about publicly for months, they have reported directly to the senators, with no new fact. This is the day after Bolsonaro signaled that he can retire the mandatory use of masks to contain the transmission of Sars-CoV-2. This posture is not new either.

Future facts at the CPI are the confidentiality breaches and indirect mentions of names that can still be called are starting to cause some suspense, especially on a day of the release of a survey that shows the improved perception of the economy without reflection on the increase in presidential popularity.

Alleged relations with businessmen and possible defenses of private interests by the president were touted by opposition senators as high-caliber ammunition against Bolsonaro. Although superficial and without details, this line was pointed out by the vice president of the CPI, Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) in a threatening tone when discussing with senator Jorginho Mello (PL-SC), who was defending the government.

Renan and Randolfe made an attacking match and will continue to play the ball to each other. Therefore, it is good for the government to prepare the defense. The ball is rolling.
