The Argentine Justice has detained a 64-year-old nun belonging to the Congregation of the Trinitarian Sisters of Buenos Aires for allegedly abusing a minor in one of the social homes of the religious order, which expressed its “unconditional support” for the detainee.
In statements to the TN news channel, the complainant’s lawyer, Soledad Molina, confirmed this Thursday that late yesterday the investigation of the nun, known as sor Marina, and that she remains detained by order of the prosecutor Marcelo Fuenzalida de San Isidro (province of Buenos Aires).
“Now what we have to wait is the normal course of the process and see if any of the girls can join in giving testimonial statements, this would be fundamental for the case as well,” said the lawyer.
In that sense, Molina recognized that there is the possibility of other complaints and that, in fact, there is another legal case related to Sister Marina “that is still pending.”
The other complaint “would not be about the same religious, but there would be a cover-up with another of the nuns (…) It is very important that the denounced nun -sor Marina- had also been transferred to other venues to cool down the complaint, “the lawyer clarified.
The alleged criminal acts occurred in 2020, specifically in a home of the Trinitarian Sisters of the municipality of Boulogne.
The testimony of the minor
According to local media, the whistleblower, age 14, reported that the abuses took place in the kitchen and in a household warehouse, where he would have suffered touching by the nun, who would also have it spied while naked.
Likewise, the Prosecutor’s Office does not rule out that there are other cases of sexual abuse at the headquarters of the congregation, according to local media.
“There is a fundamental issue here, which is the violation of girls, in feminine terms, because it was a home where they only received girls, but the violation of them in the face of the life situation they live. It is very difficult for them to access the complaint without retaliation, “Soledad Molina stressed.
For that reason, Sister Marina was accused of a crime of sexual abuse aggravated by the condition of representative of a religious cult.
The religious order supports Sister Marina
After the arrest of the nun, the order of the Trinitarian Sisters from Buenos Aires issued a statement in which he expressed his “unconditional support for Sister Marina”, while underlining the “irreparable damage” that this news represents for the congregation.
“From a episode the less confusing and that it requires a deep investigation of the Justice to which the sister herself has voluntarily submitted for weeks, that they speak in a generalized way and without any real information against her and the Institution, it is a true tragedy ” , noted the order in the text.
Regarding the complaint, the congregation maintained that Sister Marina “does not understand the reasons why the young woman may have felt uncomfortable”, since her treatment as a home cook “was always very cordial.”
“He never had any reproach on his part in any sense, which does not come out of his astonishment what he is experiencing, and he explained it to the authorities,” added the religious order.
In any case, in the congregation they assured that they will collaborate with Justice in “everything necessary”, since they are convinced that “all this will be duly clarified with a judicial investigation”.
