60 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine to be discarded due to technical failure

The United States will have to discard 60 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine due to a technical failure that rendered them unusable.

Health officials said the drugs had been manufactured weeks ago at a Baltimore plant run by partner Emergent BioSolutions. In March, at the same location, another 15 million doses had been wasted.

Products that were included in the composition of the second were mistakenly mixed with the first, which caused the contamination of those 15 million doses and rendering them unusable. The authorities had specified that the useless doses had never left the plant to be distributed.

The United States Drug Administration (FDA) then dispatched experts to the site to conduct an inspection of the facilities and the rest of the doses produced.

In addition to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the Anglo-Swedish AstraZeneca was also manufactured there.
