The coordinator of the Left Block highlighted this Thursday in the speech on the Day of Portugal by the President of the Republic, the defense of the diversity of the national community and the idea that economic recovery must benefit everyone.

Catarina Martins highlighted these two points of the speech given by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this morning, in Funchal, during an action that marked the 26th anniversary of the murder of Alcindo Monteiro, near Chiado, in Lisbon, by a group of neo-Nazis.

Alcindo Monteiro was murdered by racists in a hate crime. And, this June 10th, for the first time, we have a plaque that marks this hate crime, because there cannot be forgetting”, declared the coordinator of the Left Bloc, later linking this issue to one of the issues addressed by the head of state in the speech he delivered during the celebrations of the Day of Portugal.

In his message, the President of the Republic referred to the diversity of the national community. And our objective must be to improve the lives of all people in this national community that is diverse, respecting each and every one, fighting against all discrimination and absolutely rejecting hate crime and violence.”, stressed Catarina Martins, with Beatriz Gomes Dias, a candidate from the Left Block for the Lisbon Council, at her side.

In front of the journalists, Catarina Martins said that she registered that “the President of the Republic had two important statements”.

First, he drew attention to the diversity of the national community and the respect that all the people who build the country’s wealth, who work here, deserve from us. It is very important to affirm the country and respect for everyone who makes up our community”, reinforced the coordinator.

On the other hand, Catarina Martins highlighted the idea of the President of the Republic that the post-pandemic recovery of covid-19 “will have to bring an improvement in the living conditions of all”.

We live in a country with low wages, with enormous job insecurity and, if nothing is done, in the post-pandemic all studies indicate that the jobs to be created will be even of worse quality and with lower wages than those currently existing”, warned the bloquist leader.

At this point, Catarina Martins defended that “it is necessary to act now and reinforce the rights of those who work to guarantee that there will be a recovery not with worse quality jobs, but, on the contrary, with jobs with better salaries and more rights”.

It is necessary to combat this terrible prospect for the future that young people will have fewer possibilities than their parents had before them. A country to have a future must be a country in which people know it is worth working, because they have the prospect of a better life”, he added.
