Cologne –

Now everything can go very quickly with Mark Uth (29). The home grown of 1. FC Köln is about to return to Geißbockheim. As early as Thursday (June 10th) he could sign a contract until 2023 – with the option for another season. Because: The bosses gave the green light on Wednesday evening!

  • Mark Uth will be the next new addition to 1. FC Köln
  • CFO Alexander Wehrle presented the transfer package to the bosses
  • Mark Uth is already training on the green belt

Return actions have a long tradition at 1. FC Köln

The prodigal son’s next FC comeback is imminent. Cologne return campaigns have a long tradition, whether they were called Overath, Daum or Podolski. Mark Uth is likely to be one of the first to have three contracts with 1. FC Köln with interruptions.

In 2012 he switched to SC Heerenveen for lack of prospects. Then it took a while before he returned for the first time as a loaner from Schalke in January 2020.

Alexander Wehrle presents Uth figures to the FC bosses

On Wednesday morning at the Presidium meeting at Geißbockheim, Finance Director Alexander Wehrle (46) presented the numbers of the package to the bosses. The striker, who grew up in Porz, should earn 150,000 euros a month, i.e. 1.8 million euros base salary, in the next two seasons. With a certain number of assignments, the contract is extended for another season. There are also point bonuses in the low five-digit range.

Uth would earn around one million euros less than at FC Schalke in the coming season, but the longer contract means that the volume of almost four million euros is also interesting for the attacker, who is slowly turning into career autumn.

Joint committee had to decide on Mark Uth

After the meeting, the emails with the data of the package went out to the members of the joint committee at noon, who now have to agree to the change. In the evening they met at the Geißbockheim. There were indeed critics of the transfer, but in the end there was a majority.

Uth came to FC on loan in winter 2020 and had five hits and four assists in the first eight games. In the seven appearances after that, however, he only got two assists in an increasingly weaker team.

Uth returned to Gelsenkirchen last summer, but went under in the royal blue disaster season. In 20 missions he shot ten times on goal and scored three times.

1. FC Köln: Mark Uth as a competitor for Ondrej Duda and Sebastian Andersson

He wants to start again in Cologne, coach Steffen Baumgart (49) has the player on his wish list. In which position the coach wants to use him is unclear, Uth’s favorite role is actually fulfilled by Ondrej Duda (26) in an exemplary manner. But the FC bosses seem so sure that, early in the transfer summer, they will give what is perhaps the thickest salary package to a player who will celebrate his 30th birthday in August.

Perhaps they have also planned Uth in the storm, where Sebastian Andersson (salary: around 2.5 million euros), who will also be 30 in July, has a big question mark with his knee problems. Anthony Modeste (33, 3.5 million euros salary) should still need a while after his severe pubic bone operation if he is ever competitive again.

Schalke 04 lets Mark Uth move to 1. FC Köln on a free transfer

In any case, everything is clear at Schalke, the royal blues let Uth move free of charge, but the final written approval is still pending. It remains to be seen whether he will still receive a severance payment. This ends a million dollar misunderstanding at the Veltins Arena. The ex-national player moved to S04 in 2018 for free, but pocketed six million euros in cash, and consultant Volker Struth was able to look forward to three million euros in commission, according to Kicker.

A season to forget: Mark Uth, here at the game against Eintracht Frankfurt on May 15, only scored three times at FC Schalke.

That much wasn’t possible this time at 1. FC Köln. If the million package negotiated by sports director Horst Heldt (51) goes through the committees, Uth will sign on Thursday in Cologne.

He doesn’t have to go far: Uth lives in the city and is already training again on the green belt with the Kölner Haie fitness coach and personal trainer Arne Greskowiak. Soon he will storm again in the Rhein-Energie-Stadion for 1. FC Köln.
