Zapatero, on pardons: "This will be one of the moments that will be remembered of the mandate of Pedro Sánchez"

The former president of the Government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has gone through the microphones of Cadena SER, in Hora 25 with Pepa Bueno. Among other things, Zapatero has spoken of the pardons to the independence prisoners before whom he was already a supporter a week ago. “It is a political declaration of scope (…) nobody can deny that a person has the ideals that he has, but it is a transcendent and powerful statement “, has assured the former president Rodríguez Zapatero in ‘Hour 25’ at refer to the letter published this Monday by Oriol Junqueras.

“I believe that all citizens who live inside and outside of Catalonia they want understanding, concord and agreement. These are the great words of democracy. There is no democracy without dialogue, without agreement, without rapprochement. Thus, Spanish democracy wins again“, has pointed Zapatero, who has advocated re-analyzing what has happened between Spain and Catalonia since the ruling of the statute and he has not hesitated to ask the Popular Party for a reflection. “Without a doubt, it would be very desirable for the PP to make a reflection, it is required, in light of what happened with the statute so that, in a few years, they will not have to deal with some of the proposals of Rajoy or Santamaría “, he has sentenced.

  • The highlights of the interview with Zapatero:

The article is of transcendent importance. It is the first since 2017 that there is a statement of this kind from an independence leader and it puts us on a path of hope. I wish to emphasize that the scope of this response has come earlier than could be anticipated, prior to the pardons initiative. The effects are already there, they are positive. This is the way. The courage of harsh convictions pays off.

The right has a rather questionable record of service in relation to Catalonia. This has no going back. It is a political declaration of scope (…) no one can deny that they have the ideals that they have, but it is a transcendent and powerful statement.

They take risks and, therefore, must have a reciprocal attitude to walk the path of dialogue. Of course, I do not know of a conflict that does not need risky and courageous decisions. What happened in 2012, 2013 and 2014 has led us to unwanted scenarios.

The pardon path is a very successful path. I think time will tell, but my forecast is that this decision will be one of the moments that will be remembered during this term of President Pedro Sánchez.

It would be necessary to analyze what has happened since the sentence of the statute. You have to analyze what has happened from here. It is necessary to have calm for the dialogue and to encourage from all the instances and all the parties. I believe that all citizens who live inside and outside of Catalonia want understanding, harmony and agreement. These are the great words of democracy. There is no democracy without dialogue, without agreement, without rapprochement. Thus, Spanish democracy wins again.

Without a doubt, it would be very desirable for the PP to make a reflection, it is required, in light of what happened with the statute so that, in a few years, they do not have to deal with some of the proposals of Rajoy or Santamaría. Now, years later, we have to start a dialogue process in which the unity of Spain will not be at stake. They have to have respect for the institutions and their participation would be important. We all know that we are facing a deep division in Catalonia (…) When the statute was approved, independence did not reach 14%. It is now over 40%.

It seems to me essential that society accompanies the process of dialogue that we are going to live. I pronounce myself, in advance, optimistically. The brave decisions like the one made by Pedro Sánchez, and the answers like the ones Junqueras has given, are reflected.

It is necessary to return to the statute even if it is to read it. I think that in these years of fury and radicalism people have stopped reading. Without a doubt there may be other reforms, and look, I am inclined to reach agreements on pending issues before prejudging what the final agreement should be. We all wish we could see a brooch of a global agreement, but let’s not set our expectations so high after what we have suffered. Let’s continue cultivating dialogue to reach partial agreements. This is going to take time and no government should think otherwise.

I want to give my full backing to the president. It is not a matter of numbers (of more or less ministers), but of the Government being coordinated. A coalition government usually has more ministers and it is not easy to reduce the number of ministries in a coalition government. We have to take this as something natural, because we are going to have more than one coalition government.

I had the opportunity to see the end of ETA, and very serious accusations have been leveled at me. Things have to be done to be, not to be recognized. This leads me to say that when you do things without thinking that they are going to recognize something, they turn out well. I predict that Sánchez the last thing he is waiting for is that stability with Catalonia will be recognized. Neither heroes nor martyrs.
